Broad Acres Elementary School, a public school in Montgomery County, MD, was on the verge of state takeover less than a decade ago, when a remarkable transformation began to occur. Administrators and the Montgomery County Education Association forged a new partnership that focused on collaboration and improving student outcomes. Within just a couple years, test scores were rising and the school and its staff were infused with a new sense of hope and accomplishment.

In 2009, the Washington Post published a feature story on the Brad Acres turnaround, contrasting it with some less successful, non-collaborative alternatives that have been tried in other districts.
