Central Falls Agrees to Rehire Fired Teachers

Ending a dispute that grabbed national headlines, the Central Falls, RI school district has reached a deal with its local union to rehire the 88 high school teachers and support staff who were fired earlier this year.

Central Falls High School became the focal point of debate around federal School Improvement Grants in February when state Education Commissioner Deborah A. Gist and Superintendent Frances Gallo selected the “turnaround” model for the school’s reform efforts, electing to fire the entire staff and replace the principal.

The district and union continued to meet at the bargaining table, and today announced that the school would select the transformation model, which would mandate a longer school day and additional after-school tutoring. Central Falls is one of the poorest communities in Rhode Island.
